The Story of Veronica’s Veil: |
|
Tradition has it that while our Lord was carrying His heavy cross along the way to Golgotha, a pious woman, "Veronica," moved to compassion at the awful sight she beheld, forced her way through the surging mobs that surrounded Jesus and on her knees offered Him her veil to wipe the sweat and blood from His bruised face. When our Lord returned the cloth to her, it bore the impression of His sacred countenance in the vivid colors of His precious blood.
The treasured veil of Veronica with the Face of Christ imprinted thereon became symbolic of the Mysteries of the Sacred Passion, and a sacred relic through which God was pleased to perform miracles. Its touch restored the dead to life, healed the blind, and produced water to quench the thirst of imprisoned Christians
Christian tradition tells us that years later Veronica brought the miraculous veil to Rome and at her death left it to Pope Clement. Long exposed to public veneration in Rome, Veronica's Veil is preserved in St. Peter's where, once a year, it is exposed to veneration of the faithful.
"Veronica's Veil" is the inspiring drama based on this religious tradition of the Sacred Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Christ. |
